An extract from a children's manual on the IPST "How to teach a child think." by Y.A.Tamberg, St.-Petersburg.

The methods of creating new tales.

A tale is poetic piece of work about fictional characters and events, usually participated by magic forces.

The aim of the methods offered is as follows:

-to help children develop their imagination and thought;

-to help one invent tales "from the top of one's head";

-to develop one's skills of coherent and fearless expression of the ideas.

Without going into details let us give several examples of tale creation, including those based on the thinking methods discussed above. The basic principle is the maximum independence of children.

1. The morphological-analysis-based tale creation algorithm (by T.A. Vovchenko)
Tale elements variant A variant B variant C variant D
Hero Inventor Sea Warrior Ivan the Fool Princess the Never-Laugh

1) A table is constructed and filled by the children will tale elements and variants of their performance. The number of rows and columns is unlimited. It usually ranges from 6 to 10. As it is in our table, for example.

2) A child is given or he/she chooses one word from each row of the table. These are the heroes and conditions of the future tale. For more mystery we can set a chessboard-like table notation and offer a child to choose the "code of the of the tale", e.g. like this: 1D-2D-3C-4B-5B-6D-7B. The other child or a group of children can choose a different code.

3) On these grounds a child is offered to invent a tale. If we place famous tale characters in the table, then we will get a "salad" of famous tales; if we place in random objects, then we will get an "independent" tale. A plot is created as the tale goes on. According to the above-mentioned notation, for example, we can get the following: "Beautiful Princess the Never-Laugh was caught by the Fierce Gangster in the thick forest, who rendered her safe. She was rescued by the Wise Magician.

He gave her the Time Machine by which she whirled away back to the past, and became beautiful again, and never went alone to the thick forest." Children's tale plots should be saved for further improvement and demonstration to the parents. A good tale is not made at one go. It is better if a tale is created collectively. In two or three years the tables and tales will become pride and memory of a child, a group, or a class. Take your time. continue...>>>
